DXA Scans

Bone Density Tests are integral in diagnosing, or determining the potential development of osteoporosis. We are proud to offer our patients a comfortable, efficient system known as the Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (or DXA). The DXA scan produces a minimal amount of radiation. In fact, the amount of radiation received roughly equals the amount of ambient radiation we are all subject to on a day-to-day basis.

The test results are returned not only as an image, but also as a precise series of numbers, known as T Scores. The T Score will tell you how dense your bones are compared to an average healthy female in their 20’s, when bone density is usually the strongest. A score of greater than or equal to -1 typically means you fall within the normal expected range of density, while a score of -2.5 or less could indicate osteoporosis.

Nutrition

Preventing bone loss is a high priority, so we recommend a diet high in calcium and Vitamin D. Both calcium and Vitamin D are extremely important to bone health and can strengthen the skeletal system. The optimal intake for adults older than age 50 is 1200mg of elemental calcium and 800-1000 IU of Vitamin D per day. If you have questions, we will happily offer advice and information regarding natural sources of calcium and Vitamin D, as well as dietary supplements.

Exercise and Fall Prevention

More than one third of persons over the age of 65 fall each year in the U.S., which is why we guide and aid patients with strength-building and fall prevention programs. Exercise can stimulate bone cells, thereby strengthening bones and increasing bone density. Fall prevention programs are important to keep patients who have or are at risk for osteoporosis safe and healthy.

Medications and Infusion Treatment

There are medications available today for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. If we feel medication is the right option for you, we will explain the benefits and challenges associated with each and work with you to find the right treatment option for your individual needs.

Our office offers an infusion suite staffed with trained nurses. Also, we have televisions and wireless internet access for our patient's comfort.
